Calcite on Clear Selenite - Yunnan

An extraordinary Calcite on Clear Selenite specimen from Yunnan, China, featuring dramatically elongated, transparent Selenite crystals crossed by a striking band of warm golden-brown Calcite.

This is an incredible architectural specimen. The Selenite forms as exceptionally long, blade-like crystals, with the largest crystal extending vertically through almost the entire piece. Its beautifully transparent to icy-white body reveals natural internal growth lines, cleavage features and subtle inclusions, while smaller Selenite crystals branch alongside it to create an impressive multi-dimensional formation.

Across the centre sits a contrasting cluster of golden to honey-brown Calcite crystals. The Calcite forms numerous pointed, geometric crystals in varying sizes, creating a dense mineralised band that appears to wrap naturally around the Selenite. Areas of tiny colourless crystals add further sparkle between the larger formations.

The contrast is spectacular: glassy, almost colourless Selenite against earthy golden Calcite, with two completely different crystal habits occurring together in a single natural specimen.

At approximately 170.0 × 48.5mm, this is an exceptionally tall and dramatic collector specimen. Its unusual proportions make it particularly striking, with the slender Selenite creating height while the Calcite formation adds texture and visual weight through the centre.

About Calcite on Selenite

Selenite is the transparent to translucent crystalline variety of Gypsum, a calcium sulphate mineral known for forming beautifully elongated, tabular and bladed crystals. Particularly clear specimens can have an almost glass-like appearance while still displaying the characteristic layered structure of Gypsum.

Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral and one of the most diverse minerals in the collector world. It can form in an enormous variety of crystal habits and colours depending upon the conditions and mineral inclusions present during formation.

When Calcite crystallises directly alongside or upon Selenite, the result can be particularly impressive. The contrasting mineral structures allow sharp or pointed Calcite crystals to interrupt the long, linear growth of the Selenite, producing highly sculptural specimens such as this one.
