A beautifully transparent Clear Optical Calcite specimen from Brazil, showcasing the glass-like clarity and distinctive geometric form for which this variety of Calcite is known.

This piece has a classic rhombohedral shape with naturally smooth cleavage faces, allowing light to travel through the crystal and illuminate the intricate internal veils, fractures and layered structures within. Under bright light, some of these internal features catch subtle flashes of rainbow colour, adding another dimension to an otherwise beautifully clear specimen.

One of the most fascinating characteristics of Optical Calcite is its strong double refraction. When viewed through a sufficiently clear section, objects or text positioned behind the crystal can appear doubled due to the way light passes through its structure.

At approximately 45mm, this is a lovely accessible collector specimen and an interesting example of Calcite's natural optical properties.

About Optical Calcite

Optical Calcite is a particularly transparent form of Calcite, a naturally occurring calcium carbonate mineral. It is prized by collectors for its clarity, rhombohedral cleavage and pronounced optical phenomenon known as birefringence, or double refraction.

Historically, exceptionally clear Calcite of this type is also known as Iceland Spar, although that term is most appropriately used for highly transparent optical-grade material.

This specimen originates from Brazil.
