Product Information

A beautiful polished Cornish Agate slab from Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, displaying delicate flowing bands of creamy white, soft ivory, warm beige and contrasting charcoal-grey mineral formations.

This distinctive specimen features an elongated, naturally irregular outline, with a polished face revealing the intricate internal patterns of the stone. Fine, undulating bands sweep across the surface, forming gentle waves, layered contours and occasional eye-like structures.

One of its most striking characteristics is the contrast between the pale, almost porcelain-like background and the darker grey mineral-rich bands. These deeper markings appear as narrow streaks, branching formations and softly defined patches, creating a wonderfully organic, landscape-like appearance.

Subtle honey-coloured areas and small natural cavities add further character, while the outer edges retain portions of the original rough stone, providing an attractive contrast to the polished interior.

The reverse displays further variations in the banding, with broader grey areas and flowing cream-coloured layers. Both faces offer different views of the stone's natural formation.

Weighing approximately 85g and measuring 100.3mm × 61.4mm, this polished Agate slab makes an attractive display piece for collectors of Cornish minerals, British gemstones and naturally patterned geological specimens.

About the Mineral

Agate is a banded variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of Quartz composed primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂).

Agate is particularly recognised for its distinctive internal banding, which develops as silica-rich solutions deposit successive layers of microscopic Quartz crystals within cavities, fractures or other available spaces in rock.

Variations in mineral impurities, growth conditions and the composition of the silica-bearing fluids can produce a remarkable range of colours, patterns and textures.

The flowing bands visible within this specimen reflect successive stages of mineral deposition, creating the intricate natural structures revealed through polishing.

Agate has a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5 to 7, making it a relatively durable material for polished decorative specimens.

Bodmin Moor, Cornwall

Bodmin Moor is a distinctive granite upland in eastern Cornwall, renowned for its rugged landscape, historic mining activity and complex geological history.

The moor forms part of the Cornubian granite province, a series of granite intrusions emplaced approximately 280 to 300 million years ago during the late Carboniferous to early Permian geological period.

As these granite bodies cooled, mineral-rich fluids circulated through surrounding rocks and fractures, contributing to the development of Cornwall's extensive mineral deposits.

Bodmin Moor and its surrounding districts became important areas for tin and copper mining, with historic workings and mineral occurrences reflecting the region's rich geological heritage.

Silica minerals, including Quartz and Chalcedony, occur within Cornwall's varied geological environments. Banded silica specimens can preserve evidence of successive mineral-forming events through their internal structures.

Attributed to Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, this polished Agate slab offers a beautiful example of naturally patterned silica material associated with one of Britain's most recognisable geological landscapes.

Intention

Calm, Balance & Stability
Within crystal traditions, Agate is associated with grounding, emotional balance, stability and a sense of calm.

Its gently layered appearance is often considered symbolic of patience, steady growth and finding harmony during periods of change.

Agate is traditionally connected with encouraging inner strength, supporting emotional steadiness and creating a reassuring sense of connection to the Earth.

Associated Chakras

Root Chakra
Agate is commonly associated with the Root Chakra, symbolising grounding, stability, security and connection to the physical world.

Crown Chakra
The soft white and cream colouring of this specimen may also be symbolically associated with the Crown Chakra, traditionally representing clarity, awareness and inner peace.

Shape Symbolism

Polished Slab
Polished crystal slabs reveal the internal structures, colours and patterns that may otherwise remain hidden within natural stone.

They are often symbolically associated with perspective, openness and appreciating the beauty of natural processes.

The flowing bands within this specimen offer a visual reminder of gradual transformation, with each layer contributing to the finished formation.
