Galena & Pyrite Mineral Specimen | Greystone Quarry, Cornwall
Product Information
Specimen Description
A beautiful natural Galena and Pyrite specimen attributed to Greystone Quarry, Cornwall, displaying a striking combination of silver-grey metallic crystals, brassy golden mineralisation and contrasting white crystalline material.
Weighing 170g, this specimen features an irregular, elongated formation with richly textured surfaces and impressive metallic reflections.
One of its most distinctive features is the extensive golden pyrite mineralisation visible across the specimen. The pyrite forms scattered, closely packed metallic patches that contrast beautifully with the cooler silver-grey galena.
Reflective galena surfaces reveal angular crystal structures, natural cleavage and bright metallic highlights. Small areas of white crystalline material are interspersed throughout, adding depth and contrast to the overall formation.
Its combination of colour, texture and natural mineral growth makes this a particularly attractive example of Cornish mineralisation and a wonderful addition to a British mineral collection.
About the Minerals
Galena
Galena (PbS) is a naturally occurring lead sulphide mineral and the principal ore of lead. It is recognised for its distinctive silver-grey metallic lustre, high density and perfect cubic cleavage.
Galena commonly forms in hydrothermal mineral deposits, where mineral-rich fluids circulate through fractures and cavities within rock.
Pyrite
Pyrite (FeS₂) is an iron sulphide mineral widely recognised for its brilliant brass-yellow colour and metallic appearance.
Often referred to as Fool's Gold, pyrite can form alongside other sulphide minerals, including galena, within mineral veins and hydrothermal deposits.
The natural association of these two minerals produces a striking contrast between bright golden pyrite and reflective silver-grey galena.
Mine History & Heritage
Greystone Quarry is situated near Lezant in eastern Cornwall, a county internationally recognised for its extraordinary geological diversity and historic mining industry.
Although Cornwall is particularly famous for tin and copper mining, its mineral deposits also include lead, zinc, iron and a wide range of associated minerals.
These deposits are closely connected with the geological processes that shaped Cornwall, including the movement of mineral-rich hydrothermal fluids through fractures in the surrounding rock.
Specimens attributed to Cornish mineral localities are valued not only for their natural beauty but also for their connection to Britain's mining and geological heritage.
The stated quarry locality is based on the supplied attribution and has not been independently authenticated for this individual specimen.
Intention & Chakras
Within traditional crystal practices, galena is associated with grounding, stability and balance, while pyrite is associated with confidence, determination and protection.
- Galena: Grounding, stability and reflection.
- Pyrite: Confidence, motivation and protection.
- Associated Chakras: Root Chakra and Solar Plexus Chakra.
These associations are based on traditional spiritual beliefs rather than scientifically established properties.
Shape Symbolism
This specimen retains its natural, raw formation, displaying the irregular surfaces, metallic crystal structures and contrasting mineral growth produced by geological processes.
In traditional crystal symbolism, raw mineral formations represent authenticity, natural strength and a connection to the Earth.
