About the Material

Honey Calcite is a pale yellow to amber-coloured variety of Calcite, a calcium carbonate mineral with the chemical formula CaCO3.

Calcite is particularly well known for its rhombohedral cleavage, relatively low hardness and fascinating optical properties. Its natural crystal structure allows it to separate along three directions of perfect cleavage, commonly producing distinctive angular forms with broad, sloping faces.

One of the most remarkable properties of transparent Calcite is double refraction, also known as birefringence. When light passes through sufficiently clear Calcite, it can separate into two rays, causing objects or printed text viewed through the crystal to appear doubled.

Highly transparent optical-grade Calcite is historically known as Iceland Spar. Although the visibility of this optical effect varies between individual specimens, the transparent faces and natural crystalline structures of these pieces beautifully demonstrate the distinctive characteristics of Calcite.
