Product Information

A striking natural Kidney Ore Hematite specimen from West Cumbria, displaying the incredible rounded, bubble-like formations characteristic of botryoidal Hematite.

Across the front of the specimen, the Hematite forms masses of smooth rounded growths ranging from tiny clustered bubbles to much larger domed formations. Their dark metallic grey surfaces sit amongst rich iron-red and earthy brown mineralisation, creating a wonderfully textured specimen that looks completely different depending on the angle and light.

Several of the larger formations show a subtle metallic lustre, while broken and exposed areas reveal the layered internal structure beneath the botryoidal surface. Small crystalline pockets and contrasting mineralised areas add even more geological interest throughout the piece.

Measuring approximately 101.9 × 69.6mm, this is a substantial British mineral specimen at just over 10cm tall. Its size, unusual formation and highly textured display face make it particularly suited to a mineral collection rather than simply being treated as a standard piece of raw Hematite.

Most importantly, this specimen originates from West Cumbria, UK, an area with an important history of iron ore mining and Hematite mineralisation. Its British locality adds another dimension for collectors interested in UK mineral specimens.

About Kidney Ore Hematite

Hematite is an iron oxide mineral and one of the world's most important iron ores. It can occur in several dramatically different forms, from metallic crystalline specimens to earthy red material.

Kidney Ore is the traditional name given to Hematite displaying rounded, kidney-like masses. This type of growth is described as botryoidal, referring to a mineral surface made up of rounded, grape-like or bubble-like formations.

This specimen displays that structure particularly clearly, with numerous individual rounded Hematite growths covering much of its natural surface.
