A striking natural Sphalerite var. Marmatite mineral specimen, measuring approximately 105.3 × 53.8mm.

This substantial raw specimen features an incredible covering of dark metallic crystals, ranging from steel-grey and gunmetal to almost black. Across the main face, densely packed crystalline formations create a highly textured surface, with individual crystal faces catching the light to produce flashes of brilliant metallic lustre.

One of the most distinctive features is the larger protruding cluster towards the upper portion of the specimen. Surrounded by numerous smaller crystals, it gives the piece a dramatic three-dimensional formation that changes considerably depending on the viewing angle.

Marmatite is an iron-rich variety of Sphalerite, typically recognised by its darker colouring compared with more familiar honey, amber or reddish forms of Sphalerite. The increased iron content can produce the deep brown-black to black appearance seen in specimens such as this one.

Areas of the natural matrix remain exposed around the sides and reverse, creating a beautiful contrast between the rough host material and the highly reflective crystalline face.

Marmatite is an iron-rich variety of Sphalerite, a zinc sulphide mineral and one of the world's principal ores of zinc. Higher iron content typically gives Marmatite its characteristic dark brown to almost black appearance.
