XL Amethyst Cathedral with Calcite

An extraordinary 54kg Amethyst Cathedral with natural Calcite formations, created as a serious statement piece for a crystal collection, home or sacred space.

The cathedral opens into a deep crystal-lined cavity, densely covered with Amethyst points ranging from softer lavender around the outer edges to rich, saturated purple deeper within the formation. The varying crystal sizes, colour zoning and reflective faces create incredible depth, with different areas catching the light as you move around the piece.

What makes this cathedral particularly special is the presence of contrasting Calcite crystals growing naturally amongst the Amethyst. Their creamy-white colouring stands dramatically against the surrounding purple Quartz, creating distinct focal points within the cavity rather than a completely uniform Amethyst interior.

The close-up photographs reveal just how much detail is hidden inside, from individual crystal terminations and natural colour variation to the Calcite formations nestled between the Amethyst points. Under UV light, the Calcite also displays a striking response, creating another way to explore the mineralogy of the piece.

The outer formation has been left substantially natural, while the flat base allows this enormous specimen to stand securely for display.

At approximately 54kg, this isn't simply another crystal for the shelf. It is a substantial mineral statement piece designed to become part of the space around it.

About Amethyst & Calcite

Amethyst is the purple variety of Quartz, with its characteristic colour produced by trace iron within the crystal structure combined with natural irradiation during formation.

Cathedral formations develop when Quartz crystals grow inward along the walls of a cavity within the host rock. Over immense geological timescales, repeated mineral-rich fluids allow layers of Quartz and Amethyst crystals to develop, creating the dramatic hollow interiors for which these formations are known.

In this specimen, Calcite has also crystallised within the Amethyst cavity. Calcite is calcium carbonate and forms in an enormous variety of crystal habits. Here, its pale formations provide a striking mineralogical contrast against the darker Amethyst crystals.

The coexistence of the two minerals gives the cathedral considerably more visual variation than an Amethyst-only formation, with the Calcite appearing almost suspended amongst the surrounding purple crystal growth.

The Calcite also responds under UV illumination, as shown in the photographs. Fluorescence can occur in Calcite due to trace elements or other activators within its crystal structure.

Care Information

This is an exceptionally heavy specimen at approximately 54kg and should always be positioned on a strong, stable surface capable of safely supporting its weight.

Move the cathedral from its solid outer body or base rather than lifting or pulling against individual crystal points.

Amethyst crystal terminations and the Calcite formations can be fragile. Avoid knocks, abrasive cleaning and chemical products.

Dust can be removed carefully using a clean, soft brush or gentle air blower.

Prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight should be avoided, as Amethyst colour can fade with extended UV exposure.

Because of its size and weight, we recommend deciding where the cathedral will be displayed before moving it into position.
