A beautiful natural Apophyllite specimen from Yunnan, China, featuring an elongated formation completely covered in layers of sparkling clear-to-white Apophyllite crystals.

This specimen has an especially dense, frosted appearance, with countless small crystals growing across its surface and catching the light from almost every angle. Rather than being dominated by a handful of large individual points, the beauty of this piece comes from the sheer abundance of overlapping crystalline growth.

Across the specimen, smaller transparent and translucent crystals emerge between more densely packed milky-white formations, creating subtle variations in clarity and texture. Individual geometric faces can still be picked out amongst the finer growth, particularly around the outer edges where crystals project naturally from the cluster.

Its unusual elongated shape gives the specimen a wonderful natural silhouette. One end rises into a taller mound of tightly clustered crystals before the formation sweeps down into a broader crystalline base, making it particularly attractive when displayed upright or at an angle.

In direct light, the numerous tiny crystal faces produce a delicate glittering effect, while closer inspection reveals just how intricate the natural formation really is.

Originating from Yunnan, China, and measuring approximately 66.7 × 39.3mm, this is a wonderfully tactile-looking and highly detailed mineral specimen with plenty of natural sparkle.

About Apophyllite

Apophyllite is the name commonly given to a group of naturally occurring phyllosilicate minerals, particularly recognised by collectors for their bright lustre and beautifully defined crystal formations.

Depending on the conditions in which it forms, Apophyllite can range from large, highly transparent individual crystals to dense clusters containing hundreds of much smaller intergrown crystals.

This specimen from Yunnan, China is a beautiful example of the latter, with extensive crystalline coverage creating an almost snowy or sugar-coated appearance across the formation.

Although India is particularly well known for producing Apophyllite specimens, deposits in other mineral-rich regions can produce their own distinctive formations, making locality an interesting part of collecting natural mineral specimens.
