Product Information

An impressive Cornish mineral specimen featuring metallic silver-grey Galena crystals alongside contrasting white and translucent Quartz, with reported Chalcopyrite inclusions. Originating from Greystone Quarry near Lezant, Cornwall, this substantial 715g specimen is a striking example of the mineral diversity found within the county's historic geological landscape.

Specimen Description

This beautiful specimen displays an extensive covering of metallic Galena, forming interlocking, angular crystals with brilliant silvery-grey reflective surfaces.

Many of the Galena crystals show characteristic cubic forms, stepped faces and visible cleavage features. Their bright metallic lustre creates dramatic flashes of silver as the specimen is viewed from different angles.

Interspersed throughout the Galena are contrasting areas of milky white and translucent Quartz, including larger crystalline masses and smaller sparkling crystal surfaces.

Subtle darker grey mineralisation and occasional warmer-toned areas add further variation to the specimen. Chalcopyrite has also been reported as an associated mineral, although individual inclusions cannot be conclusively identified from photographs alone.

The specimen has a broad, naturally irregular formation, with substantial exposed crystal growth across its principal display face. Its weight and impressive dimensions make it particularly suitable for a dedicated mineral cabinet or statement display.

About the Minerals

Galena (PbS) is a lead sulphide mineral and the principal ore of lead. It belongs to the cubic crystal system and is recognised for its distinctive lead-grey colouring, brilliant metallic lustre and perfect cubic cleavage.

Galena commonly develops within hydrothermal mineral veins, where hot mineral-bearing fluids circulate through fractures in surrounding rocks and deposit sulphide minerals as conditions change.

Quartz (SiO₂) is a silicon dioxide mineral belonging to the trigonal crystal system. It frequently occurs alongside metallic sulphide minerals within mineralised veins, providing a striking contrast between translucent crystalline material and opaque metallic growth.

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂) is a copper iron sulphide mineral and an important ore of copper. It commonly has a brassy yellow metallic appearance and may occur alongside Galena and Quartz in hydrothermal mineral deposits.

The association of these minerals reflects the complex geological processes responsible for mineral formation in Cornwall and other metalliferous regions.

Quarry History & Cornish Geological Heritage

Greystone Quarry is located near Lezant in East Cornwall, within the wider Tamar Valley region.

Unlike Cornwall's famous underground tin and copper mines, Greystone is primarily known as a hard-rock quarry. Quarrying exposes geological formations that would otherwise remain hidden beneath the landscape, sometimes revealing mineral-bearing fractures, veins and cavities.

The wider Tamar Valley has a long history of mineral extraction, particularly during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when copper, tin, arsenic and other minerals contributed to the region's industrial development.

Although Greystone Quarry should not be confused with the neighbouring historic metal mines, its geological setting forms part of the wider mineral-rich landscape of East Cornwall.

Specimens attributed to quarry localities are of particular interest to collectors because quarry operations can expose mineral occurrences that may later become inaccessible.

This Galena and Quartz specimen is supplied with Greystone Quarry, Lezant, as its recorded locality. Its precise collection date and position within the quarry have not been documented.

Intention & Associated Chakras

Within traditional crystal practices, Galena is associated with grounding, stability and personal reflection. It is often linked with remaining centred during periods of change.

Quartz is traditionally associated with clarity, focus and the amplification of intention, while Chalcopyrite is sometimes connected with confidence, creativity and personal transformation.

Intentions: Grounding, protection, clarity and spiritual growth.

Associated Chakras: Root Chakra and Crown Chakra.

These associations reflect traditional spiritual beliefs rather than scientifically established properties.
