Product Information

A fascinating Cornish mineral specimen featuring dark, radiating Goethite formations alongside sparkling white Quartz, attributed to the historic Restormel Royal Iron Mine near Lostwithiel, Cornwall.

Known by collectors as Wood Iron, this distinctive form of iron oxide mineralisation displays remarkable radial textures, earthy metallic tones and contrasting crystalline growth. A particularly interesting specimen for collectors of British minerals, historic mine specimens and unusual natural formations.

Specimen Description

This substantial 290g specimen displays an intricate combination of dark charcoal-grey to brownish-black Goethite and pale, crystalline Quartz.

The Goethite occurs in numerous radiating and fan-like aggregates, with fine linear striations extending outward across their surfaces. Several formations resemble small rosettes or circular cross-sections, creating the distinctive wood-like textures associated with Wood Iron.

The darker iron mineralisation contrasts beautifully with patches of milky-white and translucent Quartz. Small crystalline cavities, sparkling surfaces and areas of rusty-orange iron staining add further depth and character.

One side reveals densely packed radial Goethite formations, while another displays a striking Quartz-lined cavity surrounded by darker mineral bands. These contrasting surfaces make the specimen particularly rewarding to examine from different angles.

The piece remains in its natural, unpolished condition, preserving its irregular shape, exposed mineral structures and distinctive geological textures.

About the Minerals | Goethite & Quartz

Goethite (FeO(OH)) is an iron oxyhydroxide mineral and an important constituent of many natural iron deposits. It commonly develops through the oxidation and alteration of iron-bearing minerals, particularly in environments where water and oxygen interact with iron-rich rocks.

Goethite can occur in earthy masses, botryoidal formations, fibrous aggregates and radiating crystalline structures. Its colours range from yellowish-brown and reddish-brown to very dark brown or nearly black.

The traditional term Wood Iron refers to certain fibrous or concentrically structured iron oxide formations whose textures can resemble wood grain or growth rings. It is a descriptive mineralogical term rather than a separate mineral species.

Quartz (SiO₂) is a silicon dioxide mineral belonging to the trigonal crystal system. It commonly forms in hydrothermal veins and cavities as silica-rich fluids cool and deposit crystalline material.

In this specimen, the pale Quartz provides a striking contrast to the dark Goethite aggregates, highlighting the complex mineralisation associated with historic Cornish iron deposits.

Mine History & Heritage | Restormel Royal Iron Mine

Situated near Lostwithiel in Cornwall, Restormel Royal Iron Mine is one of the county's most historically significant iron-mining localities, renowned for its distinctive Goethite specimens and an extraordinary connection to British royal history.

Originally known as Trinity Mine, the workings were established by at least the 1790s. The celebrated Cornish mineral collector Philip Rashleigh obtained mineral specimens from the locality in 1797, demonstrating its longstanding importance to mineral collectors.

In 1836, a tramway was constructed to connect the mine with the quays at Lostwithiel, allowing iron ore to be transported for shipment.

The mine's most famous moment came in September 1846, when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the workings. The royal couple travelled into the mine aboard a truck pulled by miners, where they examined the underground iron deposits.

Following this remarkable visit, the mine became known as Restormel Royal Iron Mine.

The mine continued producing iron ore during the nineteenth century before closing in 1883.

Restormel Royal became particularly celebrated among mineral collectors for its fine Goethite formations, including radiating crystalline aggregates and the distinctive fibrous material traditionally known as Wood Iron.

The Royal Cornwall Museum's mineral collection includes historic Goethite and Quartz from Restormel Royal, preserving examples of the mineral formations for which the mine became famous.

Today, specimens attributed to this locality offer a fascinating connection to Cornwall's industrial heritage, nineteenth-century mineral collecting and one of the more unusual royal visits in British mining history.

Provenance note: This specimen is supplied with the locality attribution Restormel Royal Iron Mine, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. Its precise extraction date, underground working and collection history are not documented.

Crystal Properties & Traditional Associations

Intention: Protection, Grounding & Spiritual Growth

Within traditional crystal practices, Goethite is associated with grounding, emotional resilience and connection to the natural world.

Its dark, iron-rich appearance is symbolically linked with stability, strength and protection, while its intricate layered structures are sometimes associated with patience, reflection and personal growth.

Quartz is traditionally regarded as a stone of clarity and amplification, believed within crystal traditions to complement the qualities of other minerals.

These associations are spiritual interpretations and are not scientifically established effects.

Associated Chakras

Root Chakra & Crown Chakra

Goethite is traditionally associated with the Root Chakra, representing grounding, security and stability.

Quartz is commonly connected with the Crown Chakra, symbolising clarity, awareness and spiritual connection.

Shape Symbolism | Raw Mineral Specimen

Raw mineral specimens are traditionally associated with natural strength, authenticity and connection to the Earth.

The radiating formations within this piece also carry a symbolic association with growth and expansion, while its contrasting mineral layers reflect the gradual processes through which geological structures develop.
